2010 Exploring the idea of a space within a space, the Something Bench gives an experience of sitting within a defined, sheltered area. It is carefully detailed to celebrate ambiguity: the bench has neither a front nor a back, yet each side is different. The arch structure divides the space, offering one short solitary section and one longer shared section, the subtle tapering width supports the idea that one end can be for something, the other can be for something else. The important point is that is does not specify what that something is. Ultimately it speaks about accommodating different people and different options. It leaves room for personal interpretation, which is something of significant value when designing for public use and public space. |
