NICH LTD 2008 Nich ltd. is a micro-enterprise design company, owned and managed by Colin Burns, who design and license consumer electronics products. Nich hired us as lead designer for their Cabinetology project - a collaborative effort to design and develop a range of high end consumer electronics products that combine digital technoloigies with fine furniture craftwork. Working closely with Nich and furniture maker Angus Ross, we explored the potential of embedding home audio system's in luxury hardwood furniture, with a particular focus on DAB radio and MP3. An initial prototype of speaker vent detailing. The notion being that the speaker would be postioned behind the straight and contoured wooden slats, which hide the speaker, but still allow sound to pass through.

A technical prototype of the DAB radio interface, aerial, amplifier and speaker unit, which was built to test sound quality. The buttons on the radio interface were turned in alluminium and the surface lazer cut in stainless steel.

We decided that the DAB radio button interface, poistioned on the top surface of the cabinet, should be hidden from view, and revealed by a hinging wooden panel. These 8 CAD sketches show how this idea could be detailed with variations of pattern and border size.

An advanced prototype demonstrating three variations with a circular volume control mounted above the speaker vents. This Prototype represents the end point of our involvement, afterwhich the peice was finalised and manufactured by furniture maker Angus Ross. The variation on the right hand side bears closest resemblance to the finished peice which was exhibited and sold at Homes and Interiors Scotland Exhibition 2008.
