SELF PRODUCTION

2009

The Audio Can is a playful re-working of the portable sound system, re-using the humble baked bean can to house a small loudspeaker, amplifier and audio input. The generic designmakes it an appropriate output for an mp3 player or laptop and is most suited to domestic or public space. It offers excellent sound quality and can be used as a battery powered single speaker or can be ‘daisy chained’ together to create a surround sound system. The product includes a removable green, yellow or grey label, a 9V battery and an audio cable with standard 3.5mm connectors.

The motivation to design this product was to create an iPod speaker that differentiates itself from the majority that are heavily styled and have increased merit based on increased size, increased sound quality and more features. Instead the Audio Can is positioned as an mp3 companion that embodies simplicity, basic functionality and is open-ended in that it could be appropriated for different contexts. It is proposed to be used in the kitchen, parkland, fire station, coffee shop, bedroom or yoga class – anywhere where music is played as an ambient companion to the immediate activity in hand. In this context added features and volume can be traded off for portability, simplicity and a generic design language.
